Tortoise shell products were extremely popular in the 1960s and 1970s. As a result of overhunting, hawksbill tortoises became an endangered species and, in 1973, a ban was placed on tortoise shell commerce. Faux tortoise products mimic natural tortoise shells because of the quality resins and techniques that are used in the process. Dovo straight razors are handcrafted in Solingen, located in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany.
